Personal Statement

I am a Specialist English Literature tutor in North and East London. I am currently preparing for an MA starting next September. I have a real passion for English Literature that I believe makes me a dynamic and engaged tutor. I believe English is a subject that can be enjoyable as long as it is accessible. In this way, my primary aim as a tutor is to increase my student’s confidence in their own abilities. I understand how demanding the UK education system is and, having received full marks in my English A Level, I know how to best tackle tough questions and demanding texts.

Personal Interests:

I am a TV and film fanatic. I like meandering around London’s galleries, cycling in the countryside and I love Moroccan food. I have spent the last year working in the television and film industry and am now preparing for an MA in International Development, starting next year. I am currently volunteering for Calais’ refugee camp and organising a delivery of musical instruments whilst working as an English Literature and Language tutor.

Tutor style:

One of the biggest problems that I see occurring in the classroom dynamic is a student getting lost within the group and losing their confidence. I believe tutoring is about encouraging the child to believe in their own capability and to have faith in their reactions and responses to texts that can start to feel clinical. I aim to stop students feeling like they are being asked, “trick questions”. I understand how gaps in grammatical knowledge can seriously impact a student’s marks. For this reason, I like to combine an encouraging environment with an informative one, offering students bite sized information and templates for reading poetry and then letting them work with their acquired knowledge. I am familiar with syllabus requirements and currently tutor early years to A Level English. In many ways it feels like my school experience was just around the corner and I am certain this helps me relate to my student’s experience. I remember how demanding A Level was and the work required to get me full marks in my English papers; I want to make that process easier for my students.
