Since February 2014 I have taught university undergraduates on two English Literature core modules at Brunel University. The invaluable teaching experience of this work in higher education has contributed to the success of my tutoring career and vice versa. I have worked as a tutor for two years, preparing students for 11+, GCSE, and A-level examinations. In 2014, I completed the Graduate Learning and Teaching Programme at Brunel University. Although chiefly relevant to university teaching, I have found the skills I acquired on this programme to be eminently applicable to my tutoring work.
Why I tutor:
I love working with children of all ages because of their unique ways of understanding the world around them and of expressing themselves. I also get a great deal of satisfaction and joy from helping them realise their potential by showing them how wonderful and rewarding learning can be. My approach is to try to remove the stress and negativity that is, unfortunately, often associated with learning for both children and adults. I try to do this by harnessing the interests and passions of my students to their academic advantage, to show my students how fascinating the subjects I teach them truly are. As someone who was home-educated as a child, I feel I have a somewhat unique perspective on education. My parents taught me and instilled a belief that no subject was beyond my capacity to understand and that learning was not a necessary chore, but the most enjoyable and rewarding game I would ever play. I want to empower my students by imparting these same beliefs to them.
