Having focused my early life studying and tutoring Physics and Mathematics, I graduated from Kings College London, one of the Russell Group of universities with a 2.1. I took up an opportunity to train and work in Finance and Accounting, gaining experience working for organisations including the National Westminster Bank and World Fuel Services Europe Ltd a Fortune 500 company.
Having spent over ten years successfully working in this area, I felt a change in direction and wanted to reengage in my original interest of teaching. As well as gaining work privately, I have been working as a tutor for several charities.
My experience began as a volunteer in the Special Needs Department while studying for my A'levels. I learnt the basics of how to structure a lesson as well as the importance of communication and positive encouragement. While at university, I tutored GCSE and A'level Maths/Physics on a one to one basis to help support myself financially through university. I worked with students from a wider range of abilities and developed a style of questioning which focused the student to think more about what they were learning.
After graduating, I took an opportunity to work in Finance. The experience of supervising staff and organising work developed my interpersonal skills as well as the ability to organise and plan work. I am now re-engaging with my original interest of teaching. I undertook a gap year teaching English to secondary school students in Asia. This gave me a better feel for dealing with group dynamics. I am involved in an ongoing basis with the charity Action Tutoring, which has involved going into secondary schools across London to work with students from a less privileged background and help raise their attainment with Maths. I have recently begun tutoring with the Bestway Educational Project, a social initiative designed to help students whose parents do not speak English. I am fully versed in the duties and responsibilities that run alongside being a tutor ie a knowledge of child protection and a code of behaviour to follow.
