Personal Statement

About Me
My specialist subjects are academic music and Oxbridge preparation. I also teach piano, music theory and composition. I am a patient and professional tutor, with wide-ranging experience across many different styles of music, and a flexible approach to suit the individual needs of each student. I am equally at home teaching beginners and advanced students. I am incredibly passionate about the power of music to enhance and enrich the lives of students, and love the opportunity that tutoring gives me to pass on my love for the subject to others. I am experienced at teaching in classroom situations, and tutoring in small group and one-to-one scenarios.

Recent Tuition

Composer-in-Residence at Jersey College for Girls - For the 2014-15 academic year, I held the position of Composer-in-Residence at Jersey College for Girls. During this post, I worked with GCSE and A Level students on their own compositions, and taught other aspects of Music A Level (i.e. music history and aural). I also delivered a popular series of composing and songwriting workshops and lectures, and gave university and careers advice for those applying to study Music at university, or applying to Oxbridge. During this post, I had the opportunity to teach in classroom, small group and one-to-one situations. I taught 30 students at GCSE and 13 students at A2 and AS Level.
Teacher of Composition at Victoria College and Victoria College Preparatory School - I worked with GCSE and A Level students on their own compositions and on other aspects of the courses. I also had the opportunity to work on a one-to-one basis with students who needed more help, or whose knowledge needed extending and challenging. Here I worked with 20 GCSE students and 3 A Level students. I also ran a successful Composing Club for KS2 and KS3 students, looking at different composers and different ways of writing music.
Teacher of Music Theory and Aural at Jersey Academy of Music - I worked with 15 students of primary and secondary school age on their music theory exams and aural for their practical music exams. We worked on exam technique, increasing musical knowledge, and ways of answering and understanding the questions.
Music Mentor, Oxfordshire County Youth Music Service, Advanced Musicianship Programme - I worked with 6 students of GCSE and A Level age in a small group scenario, teaching composition and harmony and offering feedback on their pieces, to supplement their school lessons. All students passed their exams with high grades.
Undergraduate music with Olivia - I worked with Olivia on contemporary music analysis for her music degree. She had not previously approached this subject, so I had to prepare her from scratch to look at this topic. We looked at different analytical theories and different approaches to look at a piece. I encouraged Olivia to to take a step back and to look at the bigger picture when analysing a and piece, whilst also not being afraid to confront the details. Olivia completed the assignments with confidence and I am hopeful that she will achieve the mark she deserves. I successfully tutored Olivia online via Skype.
ABRSM Grade 8 Piano with Mia - Mia was struggling to take her piano technique to the next level for her Grade 8 exam, so I helped her to look at the pieces she was playing in context, and we worked on technical exercises and ways of exploring her pieces on a deeper level, to prepare her for the exam. We also looked at the aural tests and sight-reading, and how to build her confidence in these areas. Mia passed the exam with a Merit.
Beginner piano with Henry - I taught Henry piano for a year, taking him from someone with no experience at playing the piano, to being ready to start actively preparing for his Grade 1. Henry entered his Prep Schools talent contest, playing a piece I had taught him, and he was delighted to have come in 3rd place, above many students who were older and who had being playing the piano for longer. In one of our first lessons, Henry was pleased to show me a piece he has composed himself, so I nurtured this interest by also giving Henry composing help and tasks, in addition to the regular piano learning process.
ABRSM Grade 6 and 7 Musicianship with Jonathan - I gave Jonathan supplementary music lessons in sight-reading and aural, to prepare him for his Grade 6 and 7 piano exams, both of which he passed with confidence. We worked on ear training, music analysis and went beyond the remits of the syllabus. I wanted to extend and challenge Jonathan - a very hard-working and gifted music student.
ABRSM Grade 8 Musicianship with Esther - I gave Esther supplementary music lessons in sight-reading and aural, to prepare her for her Grade 8 Piano exam, which she passed with Distinction before beginning secondary school. I was able to stretch and challenge Esther, another very talented music student.
ABRSM Grade 5 Music Theory with Charlie - I worked with Charlie on a weekly basis whilst he was completing his Grade 5 Music Theory. He had not previously studied Music Theory, so I had to build up his knowledge and confidence from scratch. We worked on ways of approaching questions, and on time management for the exam. Charlie passed his exam with Distinction.

Hobbies and Interests

In addition to tutoring, I am an award-winning composer of music for theatre, film and the concert hall. I am also active as a musical director, orchestrator and arranger. I have worked with composers including Eric Whitacre, Howard Blake and Stuart Brayson (From Here To Eternity), my music has been performed across the UK by ensembles including the BBC Singers and the Cavaleri Quartet, and I regularly receive commissions from choirs.
