My specialist subjects are Maths and English to GCSE and I also teach Geography, History, Drama and Art. My specialism is in using colour, rhythm and visual techniques to render 'difficult' subjects more accessible and enjoyable. I have experience of private, small groups and classroom teaching to a variety of ages, and to a spectrum of learning styles. As an anthropologist currently studying an engineering masters, I straddle both the arts and sciences. I have been working as a social consultant on urban design for the last four years and am therefore versed in utilising verbal and visual techniques to explain difficult ideas. I am currently a phd student looking at urbanisation and health.

Year 5/6 Maths tuition with Henry - Henry and I practised new maths skills through games and play, for example probability through playing backgammon, and fractions to decimals through dividing the garden patio with various games.
Year 8 Amelia - Amelia and I worked through some maths problems, using her interest in horses, as well as more tactile approaches to visualising maths problems through physical objects we'd find in the kitchen, coloured pens and wrapping paper.
Poetry with Leo (GCSE) - Leo and I looked at nuanced and sensitive responses to poetry, its application to everyday experiences and focusing such responses to exam questions, whilst still maintaining a personal understanding. In addition, we looked at ways his wider interests could encourage his reading skills in a way that was more engaging and attractive to the student.
GCSE Geography and History tuition with Leo - I worked with Leo intensely over the Christmas of 2014 to support him with topics he found difficult in both Geography and History - utilising various mnemonic techniques and other visual and sensory memory skills.
GCSE Maths preparation with Becky - I worked with Becky on a weekly basis in the run up to her Maths GCSE. We focused on algebra and trigonometry, and made heavy use of colourful felt tips and her father's drum kit. It went from a loathed to an enjoyed subject and she scored an A as a result.
English language and literature of various ages at an international school - during a two month residency at an English speaking Tibetan school I led English literature classes through staging abridged Shakespeare plays, conducted teacher workshops to introduce more creativity into English Language teaching through music and lyrics, and taught special needs pupils on an individual basis who were struggling with grammar.
Drawing classes and 'innate' skills - I led a weekly art and figurative drawing class to groups of students over a period of a year and particularly enjoy approaching subjects that are considered 'innate' and breaking them down into constituent parts that can be learned, made intelligible and practiced. The drawing class was well attended - there was no formal results component.
